CA-us395: II) Mt WHITNEY

Where else on earth can you find a trail that will take you from a hot desert, thru a cool pine forest, to a meadow valley of lush vegetation and waterfalls. Pass several lakes. Alpine vegetation with a spring running through it and wild flowers on its banks. Up to a trail carved in a naked granite mountain. Hike thru patches of snow in August. Walk on the edge a mountain divide ridge with cliffs on each side hundreds of feet deep. Breathtaking views of Sequoia Nt. Park on your left and the Owens valley on your right. At the end of the trail: the highest point on the contiguous 48 states.

1. Start here at 4:00 a.m. sharp.  us395, city of Lone Pine. Open 24 hours. Great place to have the kind of breakfast you’ll need to get you to the top. One block from there, the road that will take you to Whitney Portal, the start of your 11 mile trail to the top.

2. Ever changing views.

3. Trillions of tons of counter top marble.

4. No more trees.

5. From the Sierra divide, on a clear day.

6. A hut at the top. Wouldn't it be glorious to have a Starbucks there!

7.  The top rock. emerging from the fog.
